TITANIC - THE SHIP OF DREAMS - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Welcome to my web site!
On this website I will show you the passion of my heart....TITANIC.
I have been studying the Titanic disaster for 25 years. On this website I will bring you up close and personal with Titanic, her crew, and her passengers. Here, you will learn about the unsung hero's that were aboard Titanic the night she fell to the ocean floor 12,460 ft/3,963 m under the ocean's surface
.

It was the year 1912.Titanic was built at the Harland & Wolff shipyards of Belfast, Ireland under the auspices of Mr. J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line.
Titanic, was the largest ship ever built at the time, reaching  882ft in length twelve stories high and weighing approximately
46,328 tons. Titanic was carrying over 2,235 people on her maiden voyage, comprised of her crew and the passengers.
On Wednesday April 10,1912 Titanic departed from Southampton, England on her first and only voyage. After making stops at Cherbourg, France and then Queenstown, Ireland she headed for New York City.

Aboard the Titanic, life was anything but boring. First class passengers lavished in the great ship's luxurious surroundings.

Her exquisite Grand Staircase, A La Carte Restaurant, Palm Court, Cafe Parisian, Smoking Room, Library, elegantly decorated Staterooms, elevators, state-of-the-art Gymnasium, Turkish Bath and heated Swimming Pool were just a few luxuries Titanic had to offer her passengers.

Many Second Class passengers enjoyed second class Library, Smoking Room and Dining Room. Even an elevator for the Second Class passengers. Such a thing was  never heard of on another ship.
Even Third Class, with its Smoking Room, General Rooms and Dining Saloons, rivaled Second Class on many another ship.
When Titanic was built there were enough lifeboats to accommodate everyone on board, but it was thought by some that it made the decks seem too cluttered, so half were taken off.
Mr. J. Bruce Ismay, Mr. Thomas Andrews, Mrs. J.J. ("the unsinkable" Molly) Brown, Grand Trunk Railroad president Mr. Charles M. Hays, President Taft's military aide Major Archibald Butt and the richest man in the world, Colonel John Jacob Astor along with his nineteen year old second wife Madeline, and Mr.& Mrs.Strauss were among Titanic's First Class passengers.
Sunday, April 14th The sea was flat calm, the air was brisk, and there was no wind. The night was a romantic sea of stars for there was no moon to dim their view.
Most passengers were now turning in for the evening.
Some First Class passengers could be found in the lounge smoking cigars and drinking brandy, playing bridge and other card games.
There was talk about a couple of ice warnings which had been received during the day from other steamers; no cause for alarm.

Even though Captain Smith had been given several iceberg warnings, he continued to increase her speed.. It was rumored that Titanic could quite possibly beat Olympic's Maiden Voyage speed in getting to New York. Many felt she would dock on Tuesday evening, April 16, instead of her scheduled Wednesday arrival.
While the great ship was speeding toward New York City, it struck an iceberg about 153km south of the Grand Banks of  Newfoundland.
At approximately 11:40 p.m. Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg, and gave three pulls of the crow's nest bell, and said the horrifying words,"Iceberg, right ahead",and would forever change the course of history.

After a fatal collision with an iceberg, water was filling her hull rapidly. The crew started putting the women and children in the lifeboats, but were only loading them half full, and the lifeboats were tested with the weight of 65 grown men.
Near the end Titanic broke in half.  She sank on April 15th, 1912. In less than 3 hours.
The morning of April 15,1912 at exactly 2:20am Titanic began it's 2 & a half mile descent to the bottom of the ocean floor.
The stern section falls more or less straight down as the bow section planes off downwards below landing 1,970 feet apart. The stern slams into the bottom with great force. For several hours after the sinking, debris continues to drift down and settle around the wreck.

Of the 2,235 occupants, 1,522 met their death in those dark waters including most of the men,  most of the third class, most of the crew, and all of the band. Only 713 people were rescued.

Now 92 years later, Titanic lies 2 & a half miles down on the ocean floor like a ghost ship, but the memory of Titanic, the passengers, and the crew that lost their lives will remain in our minds, hearts, and souls forever.

The Ship

White Star Lines needed to construct new vessels in order to compete with existing vessels of the time such as those of Cunard liner's Mauretania and Luistania. They needed to build them bigger, faster, and better

Early in 1907, Lord Pirrie of Harland and Wolff, and J. Bruce Ismay discussed plans for 2 giant ocean vessels

On July 29, 1908, the plans were unveiled to a party of distinguished guests at Harland & Wolff.

On December 16, 1908, the first keel plate was laid for the Olympic. Three months later, on March 31, 1909, the construction of the Titanic began.

The completed Titanic cost about $7,500,000(in 1912).

Harland and Wolff, the shipyard where White Star Lines ships were built, had to make new gantries and piers to accommodate the new vessels: Titanic, Olympic, Britannic.
